Judges 3:12-14

What's easily missed here is that God's action isn't just punishment, but a direct consequence of Israel's "adding to do evil." This isn't about a distant deity striking down His people, but about the natural outcome of their disobedience – God allows and even empowers their enemies to rise against them precisely because they have repeatedly turned away from Him.
And the people of Israel again did what was evil in the sight of the LORD, and the LORD strengthened Eglon the king of Moab against Israel, because they had done what was evil in the sight of the LORD. He gathered to himself the Ammonites and the Amalekites, and went and defeated Israel. And they took possession of the city of palms. And the people of Israel served Eglon the king of Moab eighteen years.
English Standard Version (ESV)
After their first deliverance from oppression, the Israelites quickly fell back into idolatry, prompting God to empower Eglon, the king of Moab, to bring them under his rule. This oppression, which would last for eighteen years, was a direct consequence of Israel's repeated sin against the Lord.
Have you ever felt stuck in a cycle of bad habits, even after experiencing God's goodness? Israel's story is a raw look at this very struggle.
The verse states, "And the people of Israel again did what was evil in the sight of the LORD." This wasn't just a one-time slip; the word "again" highlights a recurring pattern.
A Cycle of Sin
It might seem strange that God would 'strengthen' an enemy against His own people. What does this tell us about His justice?
The verse continues, "and the LORD strengthened Eglon the king of Moab against Israel, because they had done what was evil in the sight of the LORD." This is not about God causing Eglon to sin, but allowing and enabling his actions as a consequence for Israel's disobedience.

This verse highlights a recurring cycle in Israel's history: disobedience leads to oppression, and only through repentance and divine intervention can they find deliverance. The 'strengthening' of Eglon wasn't God endorsing Moab's evil, but rather God allowing the consequences of Israel's sin to play out through them.
