Psalm 106:39-43

The verse doesn't just say they sinned; it highlights that their defilement came directly from "their own works" and their "inventions." This emphasizes that the very things they created and pursued to find fulfillment outside of God became the source of their spiritual decay and impurity.
Thus they became unclean by their acts, and played the whore in their deeds. Then the anger of the LORD was kindled against his people, and he abhorred his heritage; he gave them into the hand of the nations, so that those who hated them ruled over them. Their enemies oppressed them, and they were brought into subjection under their power. Many times he delivered them, but they were rebellious in their purposes and were brought low through their iniquity.
English Standard Version (ESV)
The psalm recounts Israel's persistent unfaithfulness, moving from their wilderness wanderings to their settling in the Promised Land. Despite God's deliverance, they failed to drive out the Canaanites as commanded and instead adopted their corrupt practices, including idolatry and even human sacrifice. This entanglement with pagan ways led them to become spiritually defiled and unfaithful to God, essentially abandoning Him for their own devised rituals and ways of worship.
When our actions create a spiritual stain, they don't just disappear. This verse reveals how our own choices can lead us down a path of deep corruption.
The phrase 'defiled with their own works' highlights a crucial truth: sin isn't just an external act; it has an internal consequence. Our deeds don't just happen in a vacuum; they leave their mark on our very being, spiritually speaking.
The Internal Impact of External Acts
The Bible often uses the imagery of marriage to describe God's relationship with His people. What happens when that sacred bond is broken?

The phrase 'played the whore in their deeds' is a powerful metaphor for spiritual unfaithfulness. God viewed His people as being in a covenant relationship, much like a marriage. To 'go a whoring' spiritually means to break that covenant by turning away from God to other 'lovers' – idols, false gods, or anything that takes God's rightful place.

And went a whoring - By fornication, whoredom, and idolatry, the Scripture often expresses idolatry and idolatrous acts. I have given the reason of this in other places.
