Judges 11:15-18

What does Judges 11:15-18 mean?

Jephthah's carefully worded response isn't just stating facts; it's a pointed reminder that Israel didn't seize land from Moab or Ammon like conquerors might. He's drawing a sharp distinction between taking territory that belonged to the defeated Amorites and encroaching on lands rightfully held by their neighbors. This sets the stage for his legalistic argument, highlighting Israel's adherence to boundaries and avoiding unjust expansion.

and said to him, “Thus says Jephthah: Israel did not take away the land of Moab or the land of the Ammonites, but when they came up from Egypt, Israel went through the wilderness to the Red Sea and came to Kadesh. Israel then sent messengers to the king of Edom, saying, ‘Please let us pass through your land,’ but the king of Edom would not listen. And they sent also to the king of Moab, but he would not consent. So Israel remained at Kadesh. “Then they journeyed through the wilderness and went around the land of Edom and the land of Moab and arrived on the east side of the land of Moab and camped on the other side of the Arnon. But they did not enter the territory of Moab, for the Arnon was the boundary of Moab.

What Judges 11:15-18 means

The Ammonite king is demanding the return of land that Israel now occupies, claiming it belongs to his people. In response, Jephthah, acting as Israel's leader, sends messengers to argue that Israel rightfully took this land from the Amorites in a past conquest during Moses' time, not from the Ammonites or Moabites themselves. This exchange sets the stage for a potential war, as Jephthah tries to reason with the Ammonite king before resorting to military action.

Distinguishing Occupied vs. Unoccupied Lands

Why does Jephthah spend time discussing land ownership with the Ammonites? It seems like a strange place to start a negotiation.

Jephthah's response to the Ammonites isn't just about the specific territory, but about establishing the legal and historical basis for Israel's presence in the land.

A Careful Distinction

Jephthah clarifies that Israel didn't seize land belonging to Moab or Ammon. This is crucial because they had been explicitly warned not to take land from those nations (Deuteronomy 2:9).

The Amorite Conquest

Instead, the land Israel occupied east of the Jordan was taken from the Amorites, led by King Sihon. Israel had been attacked by Sihon and, in self-defense, conquered his territory. This wasn't a pre-emptive strike or an act of aggression against Moab or Ammon, but a legitimate act of conquest against an aggressor.

The Weight of Jephthah's Words

Jephthah's statement isn't just a casual remark; it's a formal declaration with significant implications.

Jephthah's opening words carry the authority of his new leadership role and demonstrate his commitment to justice and God's law.

A Governor's Pronouncement

When Jephthah says, 'Thus says Jephthah,' he's speaking not as a private citizen, but as the appointed judge and leader of Gilead. He is channeling the voice of Israel's authority.
