Jesus isn't just saying they're being dense; he's pointing out that their inability to grasp his message isn't about intellect, but about an internal resistance. They "cannot hear" his word because it exposes truths about themselves they're unwilling to face, revealing a deep-seated aversion to his doctrine.
Why do you not understand what I say? It is because you cannot bear to hear my word. You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies.
English Standard Version (ESV)
Jesus has just told the Jewish leaders that they are not truly Abraham's children because they don't do Abraham's works, but instead try to kill him. They retort by claiming God as their only Father. In this verse, Jesus directly addresses their persistent misunderstanding of his teachings, explaining it stems not from a lack of clarity on his part, but from their inability to truly "hear" and accept his message. This inability is then further explained in the following verses as a result of their spiritual parentage.
Jesus asks why they don't understand his 'speech.' But is it about his accent or the core message? Let's explore the nuances.
Jesus uses two distinct Greek words here: 'lalia' (speech) and 'logos' (word). Think of it like this:
The people didn't understand Jesus' 'speech' because they were fundamentally incapable of 'hearing' (or bearing) his 'word.' Their issue wasn't with how he spoke, but with what he was saying. The truth was too offensive, too challenging to their existing beliefs and way of life.
Jesus doesn't just say they don't understand; He says they cannot. What creates this moral impossibility?
This isn't about intellectual deficiency. Jesus is pointing to a deep-seated resistance, a willful inability to receive His message. The scholars highlight that 'cannot hear' here means 'cannot bear' or 'tolerate.'
