Jesus emphasizes 'hearing' His word and 'believing' in the Father. But are these separate actions, or two sides of the same coin?
The verse links 'hearing my word' with 'believing him who sent me.' This isn't about two distinct steps, but one integrated response.
More Than Just Listening
'Hearing' here means more than just the physical act of sound waves hitting your ears. It implies receptive listening – allowing Jesus' words to impact your mind and heart. It's about taking in His teaching with the intention to understand and obey.
Faith in the Sender
When Jesus says 'believes him who sent me,' He's pointing to faith in God the Father. But this faith is inseparable from faith in Jesus Himself. Believing Jesus means believing the One who sent Him, and believing the Father's mission for Jesus.
The Essence of True Faith
True faith, therefore, is a holistic engagement. It's listening to Jesus' message and, through that message, trusting the Father who sent Him. You can't truly believe the Father's mission without believing the Son who embodies it.
