Here's something easy to miss: The verse doesn't just say life comes from Jesus, but that this eternal life is in him, as if he is the very atmosphere we breathe. It’s a profound reminder that our connection to God’s life isn’t an occasional gift, but a continuous dwelling within his Son.
And this is the testimony, that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life. I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life.
English Standard Version (ESV)
John is building a case for the certainty of eternal life through belief in Jesus, contrasting those who have God's life with those who don't. He's just spoken about the "witness" of God in his Son, and he's about to elaborate on how this divine life is received through believing in Jesus, emphasizing that this testimony is more reliable than any human witness. This verse is the core of his argument, stating the absolute truth that the gift of eternal life originates from God and is exclusively found in his Son.
Ever wonder what 'eternal life' really means? It's more than just living forever.
John makes it clear: eternal life isn't something we earn or find; it's a gift from God. It's not just about quantity of years, but quality of life, a transformed existence that begins now and continues eternally. This gift is rooted in God's nature and His generous heart. He gave it to us – a profound act of grace.
Where do we find this incredible gift of eternal life? The answer is singular and powerful.
The verse doesn't stop at the gift; it tells us where this life resides: 'in his Son.' Jesus is not just a messenger or a guide to eternal life; He is the life. All that God intends for us in terms of eternal existence, transformation, and relationship is found exclusively through His Son, Jesus Christ. Outside of Him, there is no access to this divine life.
