The verse emphasizes that while John the Baptist, a prophet from earth, spoke earthly things imperfectly, Jesus, coming from heaven, speaks divine truth perfectly and is inherently above all. The repetition of "from above" and "from heaven" underscores Christ's unique divine origin and His supreme authority, a stark contrast to all earthly voices.
He who comes from above is above all. He who is of the earth belongs to the earth and speaks in an earthly way. He who comes from heaven is above all. He bears witness to what he has seen and heard, yet no one receives his testimony.
English Standard Version (ESV)
John the Baptist, having just explained his role as a forerunner and expressed his joy in Jesus’ growing influence, now emphatically contrasts Jesus with himself and all other earthly figures. He uses this moment to clearly establish Jesus' divine superiority and unique heavenly origin, pushing back against any potential rivalry his disciples might feel. This declaration sets the stage for a deeper understanding of Jesus’ identity and mission, culminating in the sobering truth about accepting or rejecting God's messenger.
Why does John the Baptist, a respected prophet, make such a stark distinction between himself and Jesus? It all comes down to where they came from.
This verse draws a sharp contrast based on origin:
What does it mean to 'speak in an earthly way'? It’s not just about the topic, but the very foundation of understanding.
When the verse says, "He who is of the earth... speaks in an earthly way," it points to a fundamental limitation:

John Declares Jesus's Superiority
John unequivocally states that Jesus, who comes from heaven, is above all, while he himself, being earthly, can only speak of earthly matters.
This passage directly contrasts Jesus with angels, emphasizing his divine superiority, echoing John 3:31's declaration that Christ is 'above all'.
John 8:23Jesus states, 'You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world,' which directly mirrors the 'from above' vs. 'of the earth' dichotomy in John 3:31, highlighting Jesus' divine origin and higher nature.
1 Corinthians 15:47The Apostle Paul distinguishes between the 'first man' (Adam) who was 'of the earth, made of dust,' and the 'second man' (Christ) who is 'from the Lord from heaven.' This parallels John 3:31's contrast between earthly and heavenly origins.
Colossians 1:15-17This passage describes Christ as the 'image of the invisible God' and the creator 'before all things,' who 'holds all things together,' reinforcing the idea that he who comes from above is truly 'above all' creation.
