The Bible calls Jesus the 'firstborn of all creation.' What does that really mean? Is He just the first thing God made?
This title, 'firstborn of all creation,' isn't saying Jesus was the first created being. That would contradict everything else Paul says about Him!
Priority and Lordship
Instead, 'firstborn' here speaks of supreme rank and authority. Think of the firstborn son in ancient cultures – he had special privileges, inheritance, and leadership over the household. Jesus, as the 'firstborn,' holds the highest position, the ultimate authority over all of creation.
The Creator, Not the Creature
Paul immediately clarifies this by saying, 'for by him all things were created.' If Jesus created everything, He cannot Himself be a creature. His 'firstborn' status points to His eternal existence and His role before and over all that was made. He is the sovereign Lord, not a created subordinate.
