The text highlights that a soldier pierced Jesus' side with a spear, and immediately blood and water flowed out. This wasn't just a random detail, but a deliberate act by John, the author, to serve as a powerful sign and a testimony, emphasizing that Jesus' death was complete and absolute, thereby grounding our faith in the reality of His sacrifice.
But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once there came out blood and water. He who saw it has borne witness—his testimony is true, and he knows that he is telling the truth—that you also may believe. For these things took place that the Scripture might be fulfilled: “Not one of his bones will be broken.” And again another Scripture says, “They will look on him whom they have pierced.”
English Standard Version (ESV)
With Jesus already dead, the Jewish leaders asked Pilate to break the legs of the crucified men so they wouldn't remain on display for the Sabbath. When the soldiers came to Jesus and saw he was already deceased, they skipped breaking his legs, but one soldier pierced his side with a spear. This act, intended to confirm death, caused blood and water to flow out, a detail the eyewitness John records to assure us of Christ's actual death and burial.
