Jesus uses a common image from nature to explain a profound spiritual truth. What does the death of a single seed mean for the abundance of a harvest?
Jesus compares himself to a grain of wheat. A single grain, left alone in storage, will never produce anything more than itself. Its potential remains locked inside. But when that grain is sown into the earth, it undergoes a process of decay. This 'death' isn't an end, but a transformation. The outer shell breaks down, and from within, new life emerges.
This is exactly what Jesus is saying about himself. He could have remained in his heavenly glory alone, but to bring salvation and life to humanity, he had to 'fall into the ground' – to become human, suffer, and die. His death wasn't a failure; it was the necessary step for his life-giving power to be released and multiply.
