Have you ever heard someone say something that, even though they meant it for harm, turned out to be remarkably true and impactful? Caiaphas was one of those people.
Caiaphas, the High Priest, was part of the plot to kill Jesus. When the council was in a panic about Jesus gaining popularity, Caiaphas said, "it is expedient for us, that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation should not perish." John tells us plainly, "he did not say this of his own accord."
A Malicious Plan, a Divine Message
Caiaphas's intention was pure self-preservation for the Jewish leadership and nation, as they saw it. He proposed sacrificing Jesus to prevent a Roman crackdown. It was a political calculation, devoid of genuine faith or concern for God's will. Yet, God, in His sovereignty, used Caiaphas's wicked words to reveal a profound truth.
The High Priest's Office
John highlights that Caiaphas was the "high priest that year." This wasn't just a detail; the high priest held a unique position as a representative before God. While Caiaphas himself was corrupt, his office, ordained by God, made his words carry a weight that God could leverage. It's a powerful reminder that God isn't limited by the spiritual condition of those He uses.
