Jesus doesn't just say He causes the resurrection; He declares "I am the resurrection." This means resurrection isn't just an event He performs, but a reality inherent in His very being, available to anyone who believes in Him, even now.
Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?” She said to him, “Yes, Lord; I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who is coming into the world.”
English Standard Version (ESV)
Jesus is responding to Martha's confession of faith in the resurrection at the last day, after her brother Lazarus has died and been buried for four days. He reveals himself not just as one who can bring about the resurrection, but as the very source and embodiment of it and of life itself. This declaration challenges Martha's limited view of resurrection as a future event and introduces the idea of a present, spiritual life found in him that death cannot ultimately touch.
Martha sees resurrection as a future event, a doctrine. But Jesus declares something far grander. He doesn't just cause resurrection; He is it.
Jesus Identifies Himself with Resurrection and Life
Jesus’ powerful declaration, “I am the resurrection and the life,” isn't just a statement of power, but an identification of His very being with these concepts.
This shifts the focus from an external event to an internal reality found in relationship with Jesus.
Martha’s focus is on preventing death. Jesus’ promise to the believer is about life and death.

The Gospels, including John's account of Jesus' life and teachings, are written down and circulated among early Christian communities.
This passage speaks of a future resurrection for both the righteous and the wicked, highlighting the broader scope of resurrection that Jesus contrasts with Martha's more limited view.
1 Corinthians 15:54-57Paul echoes Jesus' declaration, emphasizing that death is ultimately 'swallowed up in victory' through Christ, providing a powerful theological explanation of how believers 'live' even after dying.

John 5:21Jesus declares 'For as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to whom he will,' directly linking His power over life and death to the Father's, reinforcing His claim in John 11:25.
