The text emphasizes the Word's eternal, pre-creation existence not just in the beginning, but was in the beginning, highlighting an existence entirely outside of time and creation itself. This timeless existence is further underscored by the preposition used, implying a deep, relational communion with God, not mere proximity.
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men.
English Standard Version (ESV)
John opens his Gospel by taking us back before creation itself, directly referencing the opening of Genesis to establish a profound cosmic perspective. He introduces a being called "the Word," who existed with God and was God even before anything was made, setting the stage for a narrative that will reveal this divine Word's interaction with creation and humanity. This preamble immediately elevates the discussion beyond simple history, pointing to an eternal, pre-existent reality that underpins everything.
Before the universe, before time itself, there was the Word. How does John's opening phrase radically redefine 'beginning'?
John masterfully echoes Genesis 1:1, but elevates its meaning. While Genesis 1:1 marks the start of creation, John 1:1 points to a reality that existed before any creation. The Greek word for 'was' (ēn) here signifies continuous existence, not a moment of coming into being. This isn't just an ancient starting point; it's an eternal present. The Word wasn't created; the Word was.
The Word wasn't just before everything, but intimately connected to God. What does 'with God' reveal about their relationship?
The phrase 'with God' (pros ton Theon) implies more than mere proximity. It speaks of communion, relationship, and intercourse. It's like two people in deep conversation, or a cherished guest in a home. The Word existed not in isolation, but in a dynamic, relational unity with God the Father, sharing in His divine essence and fellowship from eternity.
The most profound statement: 'the Word was God.' What does this incredible assertion mean for Jesus' identity?
This is the climax of John's opening statement. 'And the Word was God' (kai Theos ēn ho Logos) asserts the full divinity of the Word. The absence of the definite article before 'God' (Theos) in the Greek doesn't diminish His deity; rather, it emphasizes His divine nature and attributes. It means the Word possesses the very essence of God, is fully divine, yet distinct in person from the Father. He is not a lesser 'god' or a divine being; He God.

He grounds these abstract ideas in the historical person of Jesus, revealing Him not just as a divine expression, but as God Himself, eternally existent and fully present.

In the beginning was (ἐν ἀρχῇ ἦν)With evident allusion to the first word of Genesis.
