The prophecy isn't just about a future name change; it's a stark reversal. The valley, once infamous for horrific child sacrifices, will become so packed with the bodies of the actual people of Israel that there's simply no room left to bury them anywhere else. This isn't just judgment; it's a horrifying, full-circle retribution where the site of their sin becomes the overflow grave for their own destruction.
Therefore, behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when it will no more be called Topheth, or the Valley of the Son of Hinnom, but the Valley of Slaughter; for they will bury in Topheth, because there is no room elsewhere.
English Standard Version (ESV)
Jeremiah has just delivered a powerful message about the people's hypocrisy, warning them that God rejects their outward religious practices when their hearts are far from Him. He specifically condemns their idolatry and the horrific child sacrifices that have defiled the valley of Hinnom (also known as Topheth). This verse announces a drastic consequence: the very place of their abominable worship will become a burial ground due to the sheer number of people slaughtered in God's judgment.
Jeremiah speaks of a valley known by two names, Topheth and the Valley of the Son of Hinnom. But a terrible future awaits it.
The place known as Topheth and the Valley of the Son of Hinnom was infamous. Topheth was associated with the horrific practice of child sacrifice by fire to the god Molech. The Valley of the Son of Hinnom was a place of continued idolatrous activity and, later, a literal garbage dump where fires burned constantly.
Jeremiah declares that this valley will be called something new: the Valley of Slaughter. This isn't just a name change; it signifies a divine judgment. The very place defiled by the people's sin—sacrificing children and practicing idolatry—will become the site of their own gruesome demise, filled with the unburied dead.
The prophecy speaks of a terrifying abundance of death. How bad will it get?
The reason for the new name, 'Valley of Slaughter,' is stark: 'for they will bury in Topheth, because there is no room elsewhere.' This signifies a catastrophic level of death and destruction.
The enemy's invasion and the ensuing slaughter will be so immense that the traditional burial grounds, and even the defiled space of Topheth itself, will be completely overwhelmed. The dead will pile up, filling every available space. This imagery emphasizes the totality of God's judgment upon a rebellious people who refused to turn from their sin.

Jeremiah's prophecy about the 'Valley of Slaughter' points to the horrific future desecration of Topheth, a place already associated with abominable child sacrifice. The impending Babylonian conquest and siege will turn this valley, and indeed the entire area around Jerusalem, into a mass grave, a grim fulfillment of judgment where there is literally no room left for the dead.
