Jeremiah describes some of the most desolate and defiled places in Jerusalem – a valley filled with corpses and ashes, and surrounding fields. Yet, he declares these same places will become holy to the Lord.
The passage in Jeremiah 31:40 describes the future restoration and consecration of Jerusalem. The prophet specifically names the "valley of the dead bodies" and the "valley of ashes." These were places associated with death, judgment, and defilement.
A Profane Past
- Valley of the Dead Bodies: Likely referring to the Valley of Hinnom (Tophet), a place used for child sacrifice and later, a garbage dump where bodies of criminals might be cast.
- Valley of Ashes: Possibly where ashes from sacrifices or burnt debris were collected.
These were areas signifying impurity and the consequences of sin. However, God promises that in the future, these very locations will be transformed. They will become "holy to the LORD," integrated into the restored and expanded city.
