Jeremiah 37:3-10

What does Jeremiah 37:3-10 mean?

What's striking here is that King Zedekiah sends officials, who in other parts of Jeremiah are actually hostile to the prophet, to plead with him. It reveals how desperation can make even those who resist truth willing to seek its source when their own plans and advisors fail them. This request for prayer highlights the irony of seeking divine help without heeding divine counsel.

King Zedekiah sent Jehucal the son of Shelemiah, and Zephaniah the priest, the son of Maaseiah, to Jeremiah the prophet, saying, “Please pray for us to the LORD our God.” Now Jeremiah was still going in and out among the people, for he had not yet been put in prison. The army of Pharaoh had come out of Egypt. And when the Chaldeans who were besieging Jerusalem heard news about them, they withdrew from Jerusalem. Then the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah the prophet: “Thus says the LORD, God of Israel: Thus shall you say to the king of Judah who sent you to me to inquire of me, ‘Behold, Pharaoh’s army that came to help you is about to return to Egypt, to its own land. And the Chaldeans shall come back and fight against this city. They shall capture it and burn it with fire. Thus says the LORD, Do not deceive yourselves, saying, “The Chaldeans will surely go away from us,” for they will not go away. For even if you should defeat the whole army of Chaldeans who are fighting against you, and there remained of them only wounded men, every man in his tent, they would rise up and burn this city with fire.’”

What Jeremiah 37:3-10 means

The Babylonian siege of Jerusalem has been temporarily lifted because an Egyptian army is on the move, sparking a flicker of hope and misplaced confidence in King Zedekiah and his court. In this brief interval, Zedekiah sends officials to the prophet Jeremiah, not necessarily to heed his warnings, but to ask him to intercede with God, hoping for divine favor. This request comes at a precarious moment, as the outcome of the looming battle between the Babylonians and Egyptians is uncertain, and the city's fate hangs in the balance.

A Flicker of Hope, a Familiar Fear

Jerusalem is under siege, but news arrives: Egyptian forces are on the move! Does this mean deliverance, or just a temporary pause before greater disaster?

This moment in Jeremiah 37 occurs during a critical lull. The Babylonian army had temporarily withdrawn from Jerusalem upon hearing that an Egyptian force was approaching to relieve the city. This offered a brief, intoxicating moment of hope for the Judeans. King Zedekiah, despite his previous actions and the warnings he’d received, grasped at this chance. He, along with his officials, likely felt a surge of confidence, perhaps even believing their alliance with Egypt would secure their victory. Yet, beneath this fragile hope simmered the deep-seated fear of what would happen if the Egyptians failed. This duality – a surge of hope mixed with underlying dread – characterized their precarious situation.

The Plea for Prayer Amidst Rejection

The king and his officials want Jeremiah to pray for them. But these are the same people who often ignored his God-given warnings. What does this say about human nature?

It's striking that King Zedekiah, along with his advisors Jehucal and Zephaniah (who had previously shown hostility towards Jeremiah), sends a plea for prayer. This action reveals a common human tendency: people often cry out to God and seek the prayers of His servants when they are in distress, but neglect His counsel and warnings when things seem to be going well. They desire the benefits of God’s intervention without submitting to His will or heeding His messengers. This isn't genuine faith, but a desperate attempt to secure divine favor out of fear, without true repentance or a willingness to change their ways. It's seeking God's help as an accessory, rather than the core of their turning back to Him.
