Jeremiah 31:7-9

What does Jeremiah 31:7-9 mean?

This verse doesn't just call for celebration for Israel; it calls for shouts "among the chief of the nations." This isn't about Israel being superior, but about their restoration being so significant that even the nations should witness and join in the praise, highlighting God's glory displayed through His people. It underscores that God’s saving work is not just for one people, but a spectacle for the whole world.

For thus says the LORD: “Sing aloud with gladness for Jacob, and raise shouts for the chief of the nations; proclaim, give praise, and say, ‘O LORD, save your people, the remnant of Israel.’ Behold, I will bring them from the north country and gather them from the farthest parts of the earth, among them the blind and the lame, the pregnant woman and she who is in labor, together; a great company, they shall return here. With weeping they shall come, and with pleas for mercy I will lead them back, I will make them walk by brooks of water, in a straight path in which they shall not stumble, for I am a father to Israel, and Ephraim is my firstborn.

What Jeremiah 31:7-9 means

This passage comes at a pivotal moment in Jeremiah's prophecy, following declarations of future restoration and renewed covenant after the impending exile. The prophet is charged by God to call for joyous celebration, not just for Israel, but also involving the nations, because of a promised salvation. This call to public praise and prayer for "the remnant of Israel" sets the stage for the detailed promises of comfort and a new covenant that follow.

God's Voice in Dire Times

Imagine hearing these words when everything seems lost. Who is speaking, and why should it be heard?

The verse begins with a powerful declaration: "For thus says the LORD." This isn't just Jeremiah speaking his own thoughts or feelings. This is God Himself breaking into a moment of potential despair. This preface is crucial, especially in the context of Jeremiah's ministry, which often announced judgment. It signals that what follows is not a human suggestion, but a divine command and promise, carrying the ultimate authority and certainty, even when circumstances look grim. It’s God stepping in to direct the emotional and spiritual response of His people, assuring them that His word is dependable, regardless of their present situation.

A Joyful Proclamation for Jacob and Nations

Why would God command shouts of joy and praise for a people in exile, and involve the nations in it?

The command is to "Sing aloud with gladness for Jacob, and raise shouts for the chief of the nations." This is a call to public, uninhibited celebration. The mention of "chief of the nations" is fascinating. It doesn't mean Israel was to be subservient to them, but rather that Israel was, in God's plan, meant to be a prominent people (as indicated by references in Deuteronomy and Psalms), and their restoration would be so significant that it would command the attention and even participation of other nations. This joy isn't just internal; it's meant to be witnessed, proclaiming God's faithfulness not only to Israel but to the wider world. It highlights that God's redemptive work has implications beyond His chosen people.
