This verse highlights that Abraham's "justification" here isn't about the initial moment he was declared righteous by God (which happened before this event, as Genesis 15:6 states). Instead, James is pointing to how Abraham's actions – specifically offering Isaac – demonstrated the genuineness of his already-declared righteousness to the world. It’s a powerful example of how true faith isn't just internal belief but an active, obedient response that proves itself real.
Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered up his son Isaac on the altar? You see that faith was active along with his works, and faith was completed by his works; and the Scripture was fulfilled that says, “Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness”—and he was called a friend of God.
English Standard Version (ESV)
James is building his argument that genuine faith isn't just an internal belief, but something that shows itself through actions. He's already contrasted a "dead" faith with one that produces results, and now he's using Abraham, a revered figure for Jewish readers, as a prime example of faith in action. This specific act of offering Isaac, which happened long after Abraham was initially declared righteous by faith, serves as proof that his belief was alive and obedient.
How can Abraham be 'justified by works' if Paul says he was justified by faith long before? James isn't contradicting Paul, he's showing us something crucial about how faith is proven.
James uses Abraham's willingness to offer Isaac as a prime example of 'justification by works.' But notice how he phrases it: 'Was not Abraham... justified by works when he offered his son?'
Imagine being asked to sacrifice your most cherished child. What would that kind of command reveal about your inner life and your commitment to God?

The story of Abraham offering Isaac is one of the most dramatic and challenging narratives in Scripture. For James, it's the ultimate illustration of how genuine faith isn't passive; it's actively obedient, even when obedience is costly and seemingly illogical.

(21) Was not Abraham our father justified by works . . .? —St. James now addresses his two examples from familiar history in force of his plea for active faith. The first is the marvellous devotion and trust of Abraham (Genesis 22) when he offered Isaac his son upon the altar; that boy himself the type of God’s dear Son, who bore, like His meek ancestor, the sacrificial wood up the lon…

Was not Abraham our father - Our progenitor, our ancestor; using the word "father," as frequently occurs in the Bible, to denote a remote ancestor. Compare the notes at Matthew 1:1 .
