The Lord says He will 'declare' their righteousness. But what kind of righteousness is He talking about? It seems God has a very different understanding than they do.
When God says, 'I will declare your righteousness,' in this context, it's not a compliment. The scholars point out that this is likely ironic. The people of Judah thought they were righteous, perhaps in their adherence to certain traditions or their efforts to secure alliances. But God sees their hearts and their actions. He's not declaring their genuine, God-honoring righteousness; He's exposing the false righteousness they relied on. This 'righteousness' was a cover for their deeper issues: idolatry, seeking foreign aid instead of Him, and a general rebellion against His ways. God’s declaration will reveal the truth behind their facade, showing it for what it really is – worthless in His sight.
