Paul emphasizes that justification comes "through faith in Jesus Christ" not as a result of our actions ("by works of the law"). This distinction is crucial: our standing with God isn't earned, but received as a gift through trusting Christ.
yet we know that a person is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, so we also have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the law, because by works of the law no one will be justified.
English Standard Version (ESV)
Paul recounts a sharp disagreement he had with Peter in Antioch, where Peter's actions of separating from Gentile believers caused division and compromised the truth of the gospel. This incident highlights the ongoing tension between Jewish and Gentile believers regarding the role of the Law and the true basis for standing right with God. Paul then explains that both he and Peter, as Jewish believers, have personally embraced faith in Christ precisely because they understand that righteousness comes not from obeying the Law, but solely through faith in Jesus.
What does it truly mean to be 'justified'? Paul directly contrasts relying on 'works of the law' with trusting in 'faith in Jesus Christ'. Let's unpack this crucial distinction.
Paul makes a definitive statement here: justification (being declared righteous before God) is not achieved by following the rules and rituals of the Mosaic Law. This isn't a theological nuance; it's the bedrock of the gospel.
The Futility of Legalism
Paul doesn't just state that we believe, but we believe. The purpose behind our faith is as critical as the faith itself.

The verse highlights the intentionality of faith. We don't just believe in Jesus by accident; we believe in order to achieve a specific, life-altering outcome.
