Isaiah 56:3-7

What does Isaiah 56:3-7 mean?

The verse highlights that God's inclusion isn't limited by outward markers like nationality or physical condition; it reassures those who might feel like outsiders that their dedication to God is what truly matters, not their background or perceived limitations. It emphasizes that God sees beyond these distinctions, offering belonging to all who genuinely "join themselves to the LORD."

Let not the foreigner who has joined himself to the LORD say, “The LORD will surely separate me from his people”; and let not the eunuch say, “Behold, I am a dry tree.” For thus says the LORD: “To the eunuchs who keep my Sabbaths, who choose the things that please me and hold fast my covenant, I will give in my house and within my walls a monument and a name better than sons and daughters; I will give them an everlasting name that shall not be cut off. “And the foreigners who join themselves to the LORD, to minister to him, to love the name of the LORD, and to be his servants, everyone who keeps the Sabbath and does not profane it, and holds fast my covenant— these I will bring to my holy mountain, and make them joyful in my house of prayer; their burnt offerings and their sacrifices will be accepted on my altar; for my house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples.”

What Isaiah 56:3-7 means

The prophet is addressing those who are seeking to return to God and His people after a period of exile and spiritual declension. He's speaking directly to potential proselytes and eunuchs, groups who, by birth or circumstance, faced traditional barriers to full inclusion in the Israelite community. These words preemptively counter the discouragement they might feel, assuring them of God's open invitation and acceptance in the restored community.

No Barriers to God's Family

Ever felt like you didn't quite fit in, or that God's blessings were meant for 'other people'?

In Isaiah 56:3, God speaks directly to two groups who might feel excluded: the 'foreigner' who has become a believer and the 'eunuch'.

The Foreigner:

This refers to a Gentile, someone not born into the Israelite nation. Even if they turned to God and embraced the Israelite faith, they might worry about being seen as second-class citizens in God's eyes. The message is clear: God doesn't put up walls based on ethnicity or origin. If you've joined yourself to the LORD, you belong.

The Eunuch:

Under the Old Covenant Law, eunuchs were explicitly forbidden from fully participating in the community of Israel (Deuteronomy 23:1). This might be due to their physical condition, preventing them from having children, which was a sign of God's blessing. They might feel 'barren' or useless. But God says, 'Behold, I am a dry tree' is NOT the final word. This points to a future where physical limitations or societal exclusion don't disqualify anyone from God's favor.

The Big Picture: This verse is a powerful declaration that God's family is open to all who genuinely seek Him. It dismantles barriers of ethnicity, social status, or physical condition. God is tearing down walls, not building them up.

Identity Redefined by God's Covenant

What does it mean to be 'fruitful' in God's eyes, especially when you feel barren?
