English Standard Version (ESV)
This verse arrives in a section where God, through Isaiah, calls His people to uphold justice and righteousness, promising that His salvation is near. It then directly blesses those who actively practice these virtues, specifically highlighting faithful Sabbath observance and abstaining from all evil. This instruction is part of a larger prophetic message about inclusion, assuring that even foreigners and eunuchs who commit themselves to God will be welcomed, and their worship accepted.
Is keeping the Sabbath just about a day off? Or does it point to something deeper about how we live our whole lives?
Isaiah 56:2 links Sabbath-keeping directly to 'doing this' and 'laying hold on it,' referring back to the call in verse 1 to 'keep judgment and do justice.' This isn't just about observing a day, but about a life lived with integrity.
The Core Connection
Who gets to experience God's blessing? This passage surprisingly opens the door wider than you might expect.
The context surrounding Isaiah 56:2 is crucial. The prophet speaks of 'the stranger' and 'the eunuch' (vv. 3, 6-8) who, despite previous exclusions, can find a place with God if they 'keep the Sabbath from polluting it' and 'lay hold on' God's covenant.
