Isaiah 56:10-11

These "watchmen"—the spiritual leaders—aren't just bad at their jobs; they're so completely absorbed in their own comfort and complacency that they've lost their ability to perceive danger or even respond to it. The text paints a stark picture of leaders so entranced by their own slumber that they "dream," completely out of touch with reality and the threats facing their people.
His watchmen are blind; they are all without knowledge; they are all silent dogs; they cannot bark, dreaming, lying down, loving to slumber. The dogs have a mighty appetite; they never have enough. But they are shepherds who have no understanding; they have all turned to their own way, each to his own gain, one and all.
English Standard Version (ESV)
Isaiah is addressing Israel's spiritual leaders—the priests and prophets—who have become apathetic and blind to the nation's sin. Instead of acting as vigilant watchdogs to warn the people of impending danger and call them to repentance, they are lazy and self-serving, lost in their own comfort and ignorance. This unfaithfulness sets the stage for divine judgment, as indicated by the encroaching enemies described in the following verses.
Imagine a city with guards on the walls, but they're all asleep or blind. What happens when danger approaches?
The Failure of Spiritual Leaders
The prophet Isaiah uses powerful imagery to describe the spiritual leaders of Israel in his day. He calls them 'watchmen,' a vital role responsible for alerting the community to threats.
However, these watchmen are anything but vigilant:
This unfaithfulness leaves the people vulnerable and unprepared.
What happens when those who should warn us about danger choose to stay silent?
The Peril of Unaddressed Sin
Ask a follow-up
Isaiah's condemnation of the 'dumb dogs' isn't just about their lack of action; it's about the devastating results of that inaction. When spiritual leaders fail to 'bark'—to speak truth, to confront sin, and to guide people toward God—the consequences are dire.
This highlights that faithfulness in leadership isn't passive; it requires active vigilance and courageous speech.
