God's restraint of His anger isn't about Israel's worthiness, but about His own reputation and glory. He's deferring judgment not for their sake, but so that His faithfulness and power in ultimately sparing them will bring Him praise.
“For my name’s sake I defer my anger; for the sake of my praise I restrain it for you, that I may not cut you off. Behold, I have refined you, but not as silver; I have tried you in the furnace of affliction. For my own sake, for my own sake, I do it, for how should my name be profaned? My glory I will not give to another.
English Standard Version (ESV)
The LORD is speaking to Israel, who has repeatedly failed to be faithful and has brought judgment upon themselves. Despite their repeated disobedience and spiritual unfaithfulness, God declares He will refrain from completely destroying them, not because they deserve it, but for the sake of His own reputation and to demonstrate His praise-worthy character. This mercy is offered within the context of His ongoing refining process, which is intended to purify them, not consume them.
Why does God show mercy to a people who have repeatedly failed Him? It's not primarily for their sake, but for His own.
The passage in Isaiah 48:9 reveals a profound truth about God's motivations. When God speaks about deferring His anger and restraining Himself from cutting off His people, He explicitly states the reason: "For my name’s sake" and "for the sake of my praise." This isn't a secondary benefit; it's the primary driver behind His actions.
This means that even when we falter, God’s commitment to His own glorious character means He will act to uphold it. It shifts the focus from our deservingness to His inherent worthiness of praise.
God is not forced to be patient; His mercy is a deliberate choice rooted in His character.
The language of Isaiah 48:9 emphasizes that God's deferral of anger and restraint of His judgment are active choices. He isn't passively reacting; He is deliberately 'deferring' and 'refraining.'
