Ever feel like you keep falling into the same old patterns, even after God has shown up in amazing ways? Ezekiel 20:8 reveals that Israel's rebellion wasn't new; it was deeply ingrained.
God is recounting Israel's history to the people, and He points out that their unfaithfulness started way back in Egypt, even after He had chosen them and revealed Himself.
A Long History of Disobedience
- Not a New Problem: The verse says, "But they rebelled against me and were not willing to listen to me." This wasn't an isolated incident. It was a pattern of behavior that began early.
- Clinging to Detestable Things: The phrase "the abominations of their eyes" speaks to the things they looked at and desired – the idols and practices of Egypt. They refused to turn away from what was spiritually corrupting.
- Forsaking Their God: "Nor did they forsake the idols of Egypt." Despite God's promises and power shown in their midst, they held onto their Egyptian idolatry. This shows a willful turning away from the one true God.
This deep-seated rebellion meant that God's judgment was not only deserved but also threatened while they were still in Egypt.
