When you hear someone bragging or acting superior, who do you think they're really challenging? It's rarely just the person in front of them.
Rabshakeh, the Assyrian king's messenger, had just delivered a terrifying ultimatum, filled with taunts and threats against Jerusalem and its people.
But God, through Isaiah, flips the script. These questions aren't about finding out who Rabshakeh insulted; they're about exposing the true target of his arrogance.
- Prideful Words: "Exalted thy voice" here doesn't mean shouting loudly in fear, but speaking with supreme confidence and scorn. It's the tone of someone utterly convinced of their own power.
- Haughty Gaze: "Lifted up thine eyes on high" paints a picture of someone looking down on others from a great height, filled with disdain. It's a gesture of superiority.
- The Real Offense: All this swagger, all this confident mockery, wasn't aimed at King Hezekiah or the people of Judah. It was a direct affront to God Himself.
