Heshbon and Elealeh cry out; their voice is heard as far as Jahaz; therefore the armed men of Moab cry aloud; his soul trembles. English Standard Version (ESV)
This passage describes the devastating impact of an invasion on Moabite cities like Heshbon and Elealeh, whose cries of distress echo across the land. The panic is so widespread that even the seasoned soldiers, meant to be Moab's protectors, are consumed by fear and despair. Their courage dissolves, leaving them trembling and lamenting their dire fate as their land falls under attack.
When a whole nation is facing ruin, where does the distress begin? The prophet Isaiah points to specific places, revealing a widespread panic.
Isaiah doesn't just speak of Moab in general terms; he names specific cities: Heshbon and Elealeh. These weren't just random towns; Heshbon was a former capital of the Amorites and later an Israelite city before falling to Moab. Elealeh was nearby, often mentioned together. Their cries are heard all the way to Jahaz, a border town. This geographical spread emphasizes that the disaster is inescapable, affecting the entire nation from its cities to its borders.
What happens when the protectors themselves are overcome with fear? This verse reveals a profound level of despair affecting even the bravest.
The cry isn't just from the general populace; it includes "the armed soldiers of Moab." These are the ones who are trained to fight, to defend, and to instill courage. Yet, their voices are also raised in alarm and distress. This signifies that the crisis is so severe that it breaks the spirit of even the military. Instead of fighting, they are trembling, their 'soul' itself in turmoil. It shows that human strength and military might are utterly insufficient against the judgment being described.
