Sihon didn't just refuse passage; he came out to meet Israel in the wilderness, initiating the conflict himself. This wasn't just a territorial dispute; it was a bold, unprovoked act of aggression that sealed his own doom and paved the way for Israel’s conquest.
But Sihon would not allow Israel to pass through his territory. He gathered all his people together and went out against Israel to the wilderness and came to Jahaz and fought against Israel. And Israel defeated him with the edge of the sword and took possession of his land from the Arnon to the Jabbok, as far as to the Ammonites, for the border of the Ammonites was strong.
English Standard Version (ESV)
After Israel peaceably requested passage through his land, King Sihon refused and aggressively marched his army out to meet them. This confrontation, happening in the wilderness and culminating at Jahaz, marked the beginning of Israel's military conquest as they moved into the Promised Land. Sihon's hostile response led directly to his defeat and the seizure of his territory, paving the way for Israel's continued journey.
Why would God command Israel to ask for passage through Sihon's land if He knew Sihon would refuse? This isn't a trick, but a divine strategy.
The Purpose of the Embassy
God's command for Israel to seek peaceful passage through Sihon's territory might seem confusing, especially since God had already decreed their victory and possession of the land. But there's a profound reason:
Sihon didn't just say 'no.' He escalated. What does his aggressive response tell us about defying God's people?
