Isaiah 11:6-9

What does Isaiah 11:6-9 mean?

The most striking detail is that a "little child shall lead them." This isn't just about peace between predator and prey; it highlights the complete reversal of natural power dynamics, where even the most vulnerable can command authority over the fiercest creatures, signifying total dominion and the end of all fear.

The wolf shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the young goat, and the calf and the lion and the fattened calf together; and a little child shall lead them. The cow and the bear shall graze; their young shall lie down together; and the lion shall eat straw like the ox. The nursing child shall play over the hole of the cobra, and the weaned child shall put his hand on the adder’s den. They shall not hurt or destroy in all my holy mountain; for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the LORD as the waters cover the sea.

What Isaiah 11:6-9 means

This prophecy unfolds in the context of God's judgment and impending restoration for His people. Following pronouncements of destruction for the wicked and the nations, Isaiah shifts to a vision of peace and renewal under a coming righteous ruler from the line of Jesse. This passage describes the ultimate, harmonious reign of the Messiah, where even the natural order of predatory animals will be transformed, signifying a world redeemed from sin and its effects.

Nature's Fierce Embrace Ends

Imagine a world where predators and prey live side-by-side, untouched by fear or violence. Isaiah paints a picture so radical it challenges our very understanding of the natural order.

A World Unfallen

Isaiah 11:6-7 describes a dramatic reversal of the natural world as we know it. The wolf, known for its predatory nature, will dwell with the lamb. The leopard, a swift hunter, will rest with the young goat. Even the powerful lion will lie down with the calf and the fattened calf, creatures it would normally devour. The text goes further, stating the cow and the bear will feed together, and their young will lie down in the same place.

This isn't just about animals being less aggressive; it suggests a return to a state of innocence, perhaps mirroring the pre-Fall harmony in Eden. The commentators note that this points to the complete peace and security that will characterize the Messiah's reign, where natural hostilities cease.

The Child's Gentle Rule

In this transformed world, who is in charge? It's not a mighty king or a seasoned warrior, but someone utterly unexpected, highlighting the nature of true authority.

The Meekest Power

The most striking image in Isaiah 11:6 is that 'a little child shall lead them.' This child, representing the innocent and vulnerable, holds dominion over the most ferocious beasts. This isn't about the child's physical strength but symbolizes the complete absence of threat and the profound peace that defines the Messiah's kingdom.
