Israel's leaders were chosen, but not by God. What does it mean for leaders to operate outside of God's divine authority?
Hosea calls out Israel for setting up kings and princes "not by Me" and that God "knew it not." This wasn't just about political succession; it was a profound rejection of God's sovereignty.
Usurping Divine Authority
God had established a covenant relationship with Israel, including the way their leaders were to be chosen and operate. The northern kingdom, however, increasingly acted on their own will, installing rulers through factionalism and violence, completely bypassing God's counsel and approval. This wasn't merely a political problem; it was a spiritual one. By choosing their own leaders and establishing their own power structures, they were essentially dethroning God from His rightful place as the ultimate King and Sovereign.
Acknowledging God's Rule
True leadership, in God's eyes, is always in alignment with His will and purposes. When leaders, or even nations, operate as if God doesn't exist or doesn't have a say, they are headed for destruction. The commentators highlight that even when God's will is fulfilled through human actions (like the choosing of Jeroboam), the motive and method can still be rebellious if not done in humble submission to Him.
