The space behind the inner veil wasn't empty; it was the most sacred spot on earth. What made it so special?
The inner chamber, the Most Holy Place, was unique because it housed:
- The Ark of the Covenant: This sacred chest contained the stone tablets of the Law and symbolized God's covenant with His people.
- The Symbol of God's Presence: Most importantly, the divine glory (often called the Shekinah) was believed to dwell between the cherubim figures on the Ark's lid. This was the visible manifestation of God's presence among His people.
This was where God's holiness was most tangibly represented. Its name, 'Most Holy Place' or 'Holy of Holies,' underscores its supreme sanctity. It was the earthly representation of God's heavenly throne room, a place of awe and direct, albeit limited, access to the Divine.
