The verse highlights that receiving the Law under the Levitical priesthood wasn't the ultimate goal. Instead, the fact that another, entirely different kind of priest was prophesied to come—one outside the Levitical lineage—proves the first system was always meant to be temporary.
Now if perfection had been attainable through the Levitical priesthood (for under it the people received the law), what further need would there have been for another priest to arise after the order of Melchizedek, rather than one named after the order of Aaron?
English Standard Version (ESV)
The author is arguing that the Levitical priesthood, under which the Israelites received the Law, was not the ultimate or perfect system. Since the Old Testament itself foretold a different kind of priest, there must have been something incomplete about the Aaronic lineage. This sets the stage to introduce Jesus as a priest according to the superior order of Melchizedek.
The writer to the Hebrews asks a provocative question: if the old priesthood could have made things perfect, why the need for a new one? It challenges us to see that 'perfection' wasn't the Levitical system's endgame.
The apostle is making a powerful argument here. He's essentially saying, 'If the system of priests from the tribe of Levi could have actually perfected people – bringing them into complete wholeness and standing before God – then why would God have promised a different kind of priest later on?'
The text explicitly contrasts two priestly lines: Aaron's and Melchizedek's. This isn't just about different family names; it's about two fundamentally different approaches to relating to God.

The heart of the argument in this verse lies in the stark contrast presented:
Understand the original words
teleiōsis · Greek Noun
The state of being complete, mature, or flawless in the sight of God. In Hebrews, it refers to the final goal of salvation, which the Old Covenant rituals could only symbolize but not fully accomplish.
Leüitikos · Greek Adjective
Refers to the system of religious service established through the tribe of Levi and the descendants of Aaron. It was the divinely ordained mediator system under the Mosaic Law.
hiereus · Greek Noun
A person who offers sacrifices and acts as a mediator between God and humanity. The office requires authorization and functions to provide atonement for sin.
nomos · Greek Noun
In the context of Hebrews, it signifies the comprehensive divine revelation and the system of ordinances given through Moses. It establishes the standards of holiness and the mechanisms for addressing sin under the Old Covenant.
Melchisedek · Greek/Hebrew Proper Noun
A king-priest of Salem mentioned in Genesis 14. In Hebrews, he is presented as a royal, eternal prototype of the Messiah, functioning outside the Levitical framework.
Aharon · Hebrew Proper Noun
The brother of Moses and the first high priest of Israel. He represents the genealogical, mortal priesthood of the Old Covenant.
The Levitical priesthood, established at Sinai, was deeply intertwined with the Mosaic Law. However, the text argues that this system, though divinely given, could not bring 'perfection' (complete atonement and access to God), thus necessitating the greater priesthood of Christ, prophesied long before in Psalm 110.

Authorship of Hebrews
The author of Hebrews writes to Jewish Christians, likely facing persecution or assimilation, to strengthen their faith by demonstrating the superiority of Christ's priesthood and sacrifice over the Levitical system, urging them to remain steadfast.
This passage introduces Melchizedek, the mysterious priest-king who blesses Abraham, foreshadowing a priesthood distinct from the Levitical line and superior to it, as affirmed by the author of Hebrews.
Psalm 110:4This pivotal prophetic declaration, which the author of Hebrews heavily relies on, explicitly states that a priest would arise after the order of Melchizedek, directly challenging the permanence of the Aaronic priesthood and pointing to Christ.
Hebrews 7:23-27This section further elaborates on Christ's superior, eternal priesthood after Melchizedek's order, emphasizing His sinless perfection and His once-for-all sacrifice, which the Levitical system could never achieve.
Galatians 3:21-22This passage highlights the inability of the Law to provide righteousness or life, underscoring the concept that the Law, received under the Levitical system, could not bring 'perfection' as the author of Hebrews argues.
Romans 8:3-4This passage explains that God sent His Son in human likeness, condemning sin in the flesh, which directly relates to how Christ, as a priest of a different order, fulfills what the Law could not because of human weakness.
