The verse highlights that the entirety of transgressions, whether active rebellion or passive neglect, was met with fitting consequences, underscoring the Law's firm and unforgiving nature. This isn't just about outward acts but also about a deep-seated refusal to truly hear and obey.
For since the message declared by angels proved to be reliable, and every transgression or disobedience received a just retribution, how shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation? It was declared at first by the Lord, and it was attested to us by those who heard,
English Standard Version (ESV)
The author is building a case for the superiority of Jesus and the New Covenant over the Old. He's reminding his readers how seriously God took the Law given through angels, noting that any disobedience resulted in punishment. This sets the stage for the next point: if the message delivered by angels was so serious, how much more should they pay attention to the greater message delivered by God's own Son.
You might think of angels as just ethereal beings, but the Bible shows them playing a crucial role in delivering God's message. What does this mean for how we view the Law?
The passage highlights that the Law, given at Mount Sinai, was "spoken by angels." This doesn't mean angels were the ultimate authority, but rather they were the divine messengers.
The Law given through angels wasn't a suggestion; it was serious business. This verse lays out a stark reality about obedience and disobedience.
The text emphasizes that the word spoken by angels "proved to be reliable" and that every "transgression or disobedience received a just retribution." This isn't just about rules; it's about divine justice.
