Deuteronomy 5:24-27

What does Deuteronomy 5:24-27 mean?

It's easy to read this as pure awe, but notice how their astonishment ("we have seen God speak with man, and man still live") directly leads to their fear that any further direct contact with God would be fatal. This highlights their realization that God's holiness is so immense, humanity simply cannot bear it without mediation.

And you said, ‘Behold, the LORD our God has shown us his glory and greatness, and we have heard his voice out of the midst of the fire. This day we have seen God speak with man, and man still live. Now therefore why should we die? For this great fire will consume us. If we hear the voice of the LORD our God any more, we shall die. For who is there of all flesh, that has heard the voice of the living God speaking out of the midst of fire as we have, and has still lived? Go near and hear all that the LORD our God will say, and speak to us all that the LORD our God will speak to you, and we will hear and do it.’

What Deuteronomy 5:24-27 means

Following the thunderous, fiery pronouncements on Mount Sinai, the Israelites, overwhelmed and terrified by God's direct voice, retreat and ask Moses to be their intermediary. This verse captures their astonished reaction to having just witnessed God speak directly to humanity and yet still be alive, a profound and terrifying encounter that drives their request. Immediately after this, they will explicitly state their fear that hearing God directly again will cause their death, prompting God to instruct Moses to bring them back to their tents.

Majesty That Terrifies and Sustains

Imagine hearing God's voice directly from a fiery mountain! What was it like for Israel to witness such a display of divine power, and why was their survival so astonishing?

The scene at Mount Sinai was unlike anything the Israelites had ever experienced. God's presence descended with fire, cloud, and thick darkness, accompanied by a voice of immense power. This wasn't just a gentle whisper; it was a 'great voice' that thundered from the midst of the flames (Deuteronomy 5:22). Their immediate reaction, recorded in verse 24, is one of awe and disbelief: 'Behold, the LORD our God has shown us his glory and greatness, and we have heard his voice out of the midst of the fire.'

What makes this so remarkable is their realization: 'we have seen God speak with man, and man still live.' In their understanding, direct encounter with the divine was meant to destroy. The 'glory and greatness' of God, manifested in fire and thunder, was so overwhelming that human frailty could not withstand it. Their survival was proof of God's immense power, not just to display His glory, but to sustain those in its presence.

Astonishment and a Plea for Mediation

After experiencing God's direct voice, Israel's immediate thought was, 'Why should we die?' What does this reveal about their relationship with God and their understanding of Moses' role?

The intensity of God's manifestation at Sinai, while awe-inspiring, also brought deep fear. The people realized the immense danger of standing directly before the divine presence. They confessed, 'we have seen this day that God doth talk with man, and he liveth,' but this was followed by a fearful question: 'Now therefore why should we die? for this great fire will consume us. If we hear the voice of the Lord our God any more, then we shall die' (Deuteronomy 5:25-26).
