The cross was agony, shame, and death. So what could possibly make Jesus 'endure' it with joy?
This verse gives us a stunning insight into Jesus' motivation: 'for the joy that was set before him.' This wasn't a joy He felt during the suffering, but a future joy He focused on, which gave Him strength through the suffering.

The Joy of Redemption
This joy included the incredible satisfaction of accomplishing God's plan for salvation. It was the joy of seeing humanity reconciled to God, of bringing many 'sons to glory.' As Isaiah 53:11 says, 'He will see the fruit of that labor and be satisfied.'
The Joy of His Reward
It also included the joy of His own exaltation – being seated at the right hand of God, crowned with glory and honor. This future glory and the success of His mission were the powerful motivators that allowed Him to face the cross and 'despise the shame.'
The cross was the ultimate humiliation. How could Jesus 'despise' it? The answer lies in His perspective.
The phrase 'despising the shame' is powerful. It doesn't mean Jesus was unaffected by the pain or humiliation. Instead, it reveals His radically different perspective, shaped by His divine identity and mission.
Beyond Earthly Shame
To the Roman and Jewish world, crucifixion was the most degrading punishment, reserved for criminals. The shame was immense. But Jesus saw beyond the immediate agony and disgrace. His gaze was fixed on the eternal, on the Father's glory and the salvation of souls.
The Power of a Fixed Gaze
He looked from the shame to the joy. This is the essence of the verse's command: 'looking to Jesus.' When we fix our eyes on Him – His purpose, His reward, His victory – the shame and difficulties we face shrink in significance. He understood that the temporary suffering was insignificant compared to the eternal glory and the success of His redemptive work.
