The verse emphasizes that the crushing of the Servant was not an accident but the "will of the LORD," revealing a divine plan behind the suffering. This wasn't just about punishment, but about the Servant's "soul making an offering for guilt," a profound exchange where his very being becomes the price for sin, paving the way for his future joy and the success of God's purposes.
Yet it was the will of the LORD to crush him; he has put him to grief; when his soul makes an offering for guilt, he shall see his offspring; he shall prolong his days; the will of the LORD shall prosper in his hand. Out of the anguish of his soul he shall see and be satisfied; by his knowledge shall the righteous one, my servant, make many to be accounted righteous, and he shall bear their iniquities.
English Standard Version (ESV)
This passage shifts perspective from the suffering servant's experience to God's perspective and the ultimate outcome of the servant's sacrifice. It explains that God's will was behind the suffering, not as a punishment for the servant, but as a necessary part of a divine plan. The verses that follow this predict the servant's future exaltation, seeing his "offspring" (believers), enjoying long life (eternal life), and seeing God's purposes fulfilled through him.
The verse states, 'Yet it was the will of the LORD to crush him.' This isn't about chance or accident; it's about a divine plan. What does it mean for God's will to be the driving force behind such immense suffering?
This verse reveals a profound truth: the suffering of the Servant wasn't a cosmic accident or a result of random evil. It was, shockingly, part of the LORD's will. This doesn't mean God delighted in pain itself, but rather that He willed the outcome that His Son's crushing would bring about – our salvation.

This is where the prophet unveils the glorious outcome of the Servant's sacrifice. The 'offering for guilt' refers to the Servant making Himself the ultimate atonement for sin, taking upon Himself the penalty that humanity deserved.
