The word 'sanctified' can feel a bit abstract. What does it truly mean for us to be 'sanctified through the offering of Christ'?
Being sanctified in this context is about being set apart, declared holy, and made fit for God's presence through Christ's sacrifice.
Declared Holy
Primarily, this refers to our positional sanctification. Because Christ offered His perfect life and body for us, we are declared righteous and holy in God's eyes. Our sin debt is paid, and we are viewed as pure, not because of anything we've done, but because of what Christ has done. This is a finished work.
Consecrated to God
Secondly, it implies a consecration. We are set apart from sin and dedicated to God. This doesn't mean we are sinless perfection in our daily lives (that's progressive sanctification), but that our identity is now fundamentally changed. We belong to God, and His Spirit begins the work of making our lives outwardly reflect that inner reality.
The Power of His Sacrifice
It's the offering of Christ's body that makes this sanctification possible. His death cleanses us from guilt and consecrates us to God, establishing a new and perfect relationship.
