What's easy to miss is the profound irony that the very maker of an idol, who pours their skill and effort into its creation, ends up trusting in their own lifeless handiwork. This idol, which has no voice and teaches only lies, becomes the object of trust for the one who knows best that it’s merely a product of their own craft.
“What profit is an idol when its maker has shaped it, a metal image, a teacher of lies? For its maker trusts in his own creation when he makes speechless idols! Woe to him who says to a wooden thing, Awake; to a silent stone, Arise! Can this teach? Behold, it is overlaid with gold and silver, and there is no breath at all in it. But the LORD is in his holy temple; let all the earth keep silence before him.”
English Standard Version (ESV)
Habakkuk is in the midst of pronouncing a series of "woes" against the Babylonians and their oppressive empire. Having already denounced their greed, violence, and idolatry, he now directly challenges the futility of their gods. The prophet's focus shifts from the actions of the oppressor to the emptiness of the objects of their worship, highlighting their complete inability to offer any real help or deliverance.
What good is a god that can't do anything? Habakkuk cuts through the noise of idolatry with a blunt question.
Habakkuk opens this verse with a sharp, rhetorical question: "What profit is an idol?" This isn't just about financial gain; it's about ultimate benefit, salvation, and help.
No Real Benefit
This questions the very foundation of idolatry – the belief that these created objects hold power or can offer assistance.
It's one thing for an idol to be useless; it's another for its creator to trust in it. Habakkuk highlights a profound self-deception.
Ask a follow-up
Habakkuk zeroes in on the incredible folly of the idol maker. It's not just that the idol is worthless, but that the one who made it places their trust in their own handiwork.
The Creator's Illusion
This reveals a deep human tendency to create things that we then rely on, whether material possessions, personal achievements, or even false religious systems, placing trust in our own constructions rather than the living God.

This passage powerfully critiques the creation and worship of idols, highlighting their uselessness and the folly of trusting in something made by human hands, mirroring Habakkuk's point about the 'profit' of an idol.
Jeremiah 10:1-16Jeremiah echoes Habakkuk's theme by contrasting the living God with idols made by artisans, calling them 'teachers of lies' and emphasizing that they are 'worthless and a mockery,' which directly supports the idea of an idol's lack of profit.
Psalm 115:1-8This Psalm directly addresses the impotence of idols, describing them as having mouths but not speaking, eyes but not seeing, and hands but not handling, reinforcing Habakkuk's depiction of 'dumb idols' and their inability to help.
1 Corinthians 8:4-6Paul discusses the nature of idols in the New Testament, stating that 'an idol is nothing in the world' and that while some may be called 'gods,' 'to us there is one God.' This aligns with Habakkuk's assessment of idols as empty and not truly gods.
Daniel 3:1-30The story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego refusing to bow to Nebuchadnezzar's golden image shows the ultimate failure of such man-made objects to protect their worshippers, contrasting with the true deliverance found in God, just as Habakkuk questions the idol's profit.
