Ever felt like the world is full of 'bitter and hasty' people, acting with no regard for others? You're not alone. Habakkuk felt it too, but he saw something even more astonishing.
The prophet Habakkuk is wrestling with how a good God can use wicked nations to bring about His justice. Notice how God speaks about the Chaldeans, a brutal and swift people: "I am raising up the Chaldeans."
Divine Authority in Human Action
This doesn't mean God approves of their cruelty. Instead, it highlights His ultimate sovereignty. He allows and even directs these forces, not because He shares their motives, but because He is using them as instruments to accomplish His own righteous purposes. They act out of their own greed and ambition, but God orchestrates their advance.
A Bitter Pill for a Bitter People
God's justice often works through means that seem contrary to His nature – using the 'bitter and hasty' to confront sin. The Chaldeans' very characteristics of cruelty and speed are the tools God employs against a sinful people.
