What's easily missed here is that Joseph isn't just randomly in the house; he's there to "do his business." This subtle phrase highlights that he was occupied with his responsibilities and wasn't seeking out an opportunity for temptation. It underscores his diligence and commitment to his work, even in a foreign land.
But one day, when he went into the house to do his work and none of the men of the house was there in the house, she caught him by his garment, saying, “Lie with me.” But he left his garment in her hand and fled and got out of the house.
English Standard Version (ESV)
Potiphar's wife has been persistently trying to seduce Joseph, who has consistently refused her advances. This particular day, she finds him alone in the house while all the other male servants are absent. She seizes the opportunity to make another forceful attempt to draw him into her bedchamber.
Why did this specific moment, with no one else around, become the flashpoint for such a profound test for Joseph?
The narrative in Genesis 39 highlights how temptation often strikes at the most opportune, yet vulnerable, moments. Verse 11 points to a carefully chosen time: 'about this time,' and 'none of the men of the house... there within.' This wasn't random; it was the result of a woman's persistent advances creating a calculated opportunity.
How does being alone amplify the pressure to compromise, and what does Joseph's response teach us about true character?
The isolation described in Genesis 39:11 is critical. When no one is watching, the true state of a person's heart is often revealed. Joseph, alone with Potiphar's wife, faced a choice that would define his character and his future.

Proverbs 6:27-29This passage warns against the disastrous consequences of adultery, asking 'Can a man take fire to his bosom, and his clothes not be burned? This resonates with Joseph's refusal to sin and the potential ruin he avoided.

Hebrews 13:4The call for marriage to be held in honor and the marriage bed to be kept pure directly contrasts with the temptation Joseph faced. His faithfulness exemplifies this standard, even when under immense pressure and false accusation.
