While Leah had already borne four sons, the text highlights she acts when she observes a pause in her childbearing, echoing Rachel's earlier desperate move. This wasn't just about having more children, but about Leah's strategy to maintain her standing with Jacob and perhaps even outdo her sister, revealing the intense rivalry at play.
When Leah saw that she had ceased bearing children, she took her servant Zilpah and gave her to Jacob as a wife. Then Leah’s servant Zilpah bore Jacob a son. And Leah said, “Good fortune has come!” so she called his name Gad. Leah’s servant Zilpah bore Jacob a second son. And Leah said, “Happy am I! For women have called me happy.” So she called his name Asher.
English Standard Version (ESV)
Leah, noticing she hadn't had a child for some time, follows Rachel's lead and gives her servant Zilpah to Jacob as a wife, hoping to increase her own standing and family line through her. This act reflects the intense rivalry and competition for Jacob's favor between the sisters.
In the intense competition between Leah and Rachel, a common human struggle takes center stage: insecurity driving desperate actions.
Leah, seeing that she had stopped bearing children, took a drastic step by giving her servant Zilpah to Jacob as a wife. This action wasn't about love or divine leading; it was a reaction to her perceived loss of status and Jacob's affection. Both sisters were caught in a cycle of comparison and envy, each trying to secure their place through the children they could produce via their maids. It highlights how feelings of inadequacy can lead us to mimic the flawed strategies of others, rather than seeking God's wisdom.
The names Leah gives to Zilpah's children reveal a deeper desire: not just for children, but for a certain kind of recognition and future.
When Zilpah bears children, Leah doesn't simply rejoice; she names them strategically. The first son she names Gad, meaning 'good luck' or 'fortune,' reflecting a hope for prosperity. The second she names Asher, meaning 'happy' or 'blessed,' signifying her own perceived happiness and blessedness. This shows that Leah was not just looking for heirs, but for signs of divine favor and a secure future for herself within Jacob's household. She was trying to build her legacy based on the circumstances of births rather than on a deep trust in God's overarching plan.
