Ruth 4:11-13

What does Ruth 4:11-13 mean?

This blessing for Ruth is profound because it doesn't just wish her a fruitful marriage, but asks that she be like Rachel and Leah, who built the house of Israel. The Hebrew word for "build" here is deeply connected to the word for "son" and "daughter," highlighting that her future children will literally continue the lineage and structure of God's people.

Then all the people who were at the gate and the elders said, “We are witnesses. May the LORD make the woman, who is coming into your house, like Rachel and Leah, who together built up the house of Israel. May you act worthily in Ephrathah and be renowned in Bethlehem, and may your house be like the house of Perez, whom Tamar bore to Judah, because of the offspring that the LORD will give you by this young woman.” So Boaz took Ruth, and she became his wife. And he went in to her, and the LORD gave her conception, and she bore a son.

Boaz has just publicly declared his intention to redeem Elimelech's land and take Ruth as his wife, a significant step after the kinsman-redeemer declined. In response, the elders and townspeople gathered at the gate officially sanction the union and the transfer of property, pronouncing a blessing upon Ruth and Boaz. They pray that Ruth will be as fruitful as the matriarchs Rachel and Leah, who birthed the nation of Israel, and that Boaz will act with integrity and gain renown in their hometown.
