The serpent doesn't just deny God's warning; he twists it by saying "Ye shall not surely die." This subtle addition implies that death isn't an absolute certainty, but rather a possibility that can be avoided or is even unlikely, a crucial distinction that plants the seed of doubt and defiance. This linguistic trick aims to undermine the authority of God's word by suggesting it's not entirely trustworthy or definitive.
But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate.
English Standard Version (ESV)
The serpent has just overheard the woman recounting God's command about the forbidden tree, including the warning of death. Now, the serpent directly contradicts God's word, claiming that death will not be the consequence of eating the fruit. This denial of the penalty is the second step in the serpent's temptation strategy, aiming to remove Eve's fear and make the forbidden fruit seem less dangerous.
The serpent’s words weren't just a suggestion; they were a blatant, audacious contradiction of God’s clear command. This wasn't a subtle nudge; it was a direct challenge to divine authority.
The serpent’s opening move in the temptation is a direct assault on God's truth. He doesn't gently question or inquire; he flatly states, 'You will not surely die.' This is the foundation of his deception.
How can a lie sound so convincing? The serpent masterfully wove a thread of truth into his falsehood, making the deception all the more potent.
The serpent’s lie isn't entirely fabricated. It contains a kernel of truth that makes it dangerously deceptive.
