The ultimate enemy isn't just death itself, but the power behind death. Jesus' mission was to dismantle that power at its source.
The Devil's Deadly Grip
The verse states Jesus came "that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil." This is profound!
- The Devil's Authority: The devil doesn't have ultimate power over death, but he wields it. Sin entered the world through his deception, and death is sin's consequence. This gave him a strong, albeit delegated, authority over humanity, often manifesting as the fear of death.
- Death as a Tool: For humanity, death became a terrifying reality, a constant reminder of sin and separation from God. The devil used this fear to keep people in bondage.
- Jesus' Strategic Victory: Jesus' death wasn't a defeat; it was the strategic weapon. By dying, He faced the ultimate consequence of sin – death – and overcame it. His death rendered the devil's power over death ineffectual. He didn't destroy the devil's existence, but he dismantled his primary weapon and authority over believers.
Think of it like a king whose main weapon has been captured and turned against him. The king is still a king, but his greatest threat is neutralized.
