Abram's immediate fear upon nearing Egypt isn't just about his own safety, but a stark admission that his wife's beauty is so striking, Egyptians would likely kill him to possess her. This reveals a profound vulnerability and a pragmatic, albeit flawed, strategy driven by his deep-seated fear for his own life and the future of God's promise through him.
When he was about to enter Egypt, he said to Sarai his wife, “I know that you are a woman beautiful in appearance, and when the Egyptians see you, they will say, ‘This is his wife.’ Then they will kill me, but they will let you live. Say you are my sister, that it may go well with me because of you, and that my life may be spared for your sake.”
English Standard Version (ESV)
Faced with a severe famine in the land, Abram decides to travel down to Egypt, a land known for its fertile Nile valley. Fearing that his striking beauty would put his life in danger as Egyptians might kill him to take his wife, Sarai, he instructs her to pretend to be his sister.
Sarai was 'beautiful in appearance.' In a world where beauty could be a death sentence for a husband and a passport to peril for a wife, Abram's fear was palpable. What does this tell us about the perceived value and danger of beauty, even in ancient times?
Abram's immediate reaction upon nearing Egypt reveals a harsh reality: Sarai's striking beauty wasn't just an aesthetic quality; it was a significant social and political asset, yet also a profound danger.
