Galatians 4:22-25

This verse isn't just quoting a Bible story; it's highlighting a foundational contrast Paul wants us to grasp immediately: slavery versus freedom, exemplified by two sons born under vastly different circumstances. It sets the stage for understanding that our spiritual identity hinges not on human effort, but on divine promise.
For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by a slave woman and one by a free woman. But the son of the slave was born according to the flesh, while the son of the free woman was born through promise. Now this may be interpreted allegorically: these women are two covenants. One is from Mount Sinai, bearing children for slavery; she is Hagar. Now Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia; she corresponds to the present Jerusalem, for she is in slavery with her children.
English Standard Version (ESV)
Paul is challenging the Galatians, who are tempted to return to the Old Covenant's legalistic practices, by reminding them that this path leads to bondage. He introduces the story of Abraham's two sons, Ishmael, born to the slave Hagar, and Isaac, born to the free Sarah, as a foundational allegory for the two covenants. This sets up his argument that those seeking righteousness through the law are like Ishmael, born into slavery, while those through faith are like Isaac, born free.
Paul drops a historical bombshell in this verse! He's not just recounting a family drama; he's laying the groundwork for a profound theological argument. But what makes this specific detail so crucial?
Paul uses the well-known story of Abraham's sons, Ishmael and Isaac, as a powerful illustration. He's drawing a direct parallel between two women in Abraham's life and two spiritual realities for believers.
Paul is setting up an argument: which of these two 'mothers' are the Galatians choosing to follow? Are they leaning on their own efforts under the Law, or trusting in God's free grace?
Have you ever felt trapped, like you're constantly trying to earn your way to acceptance? Paul uses Abraham's family to expose this very struggle.
The core of Paul's argument here is about two fundamental paths to relating to God:
The Path of the Law (Bondwoman)

A person owned by another, lacking legal freedom or autonomy. In a theological sense, it represents the state of being under the condemnation and bondage of sin and the curse of the law.
sarx · Greek Noun
In a biblical context, it refers to the fallen human nature—the tendency to act according to selfish, worldly desires apart from the empowering presence of the Holy Spirit. It stands in contrast to the spiritual life produced by God's grace.
epangelia · Greek Noun
A declaration or oath from God regarding future action or blessing. It emphasizes that God's redemptive work is initiated by His sovereign initiative and received through faith, rather than earned by human effort.
allēgoreō · Greek Verb
A literary device where a narrative is interpreted to reveal a deeper, often spiritual, meaning beyond the literal historical sense. In Paul's usage, it serves to demonstrate the typological correspondence between Old Testament history and New Covenant realities.
diathēkē · Greek Noun
A formal, solemn agreement between God and His people, establishing the terms of their relationship. Throughout the Bible, covenants define how God interacts with humanity, contrasting law-based systems of performance with grace-based systems of faith.

Hagar and Ishmael Exiled
Tensions rise between Sarah and Hagar, leading Abraham to banish Hagar and Ishmael. This event highlights the separation between the lineage of the slave woman and the free woman.
This passage provides the historical account of Abraham and Hagar, detailing Ishmael's birth and establishing the foundational narrative that Paul later uses allegorically.
Genesis 21:1-21This chapter records the birth of Isaac to Sarah, the fulfillment of God's promise, and the subsequent expulsion of Hagar and Ishmael, highlighting the contrast between the promised son and the son born 'according to the flesh'.
Romans 9:7-13Paul here also uses Abraham's sons to illustrate God's sovereign choice, differentiating between those born naturally and those born through the promise, mirroring the core argument in Galatians.
Galatians 4:28-31This section directly applies the allegory introduced in verse 22, explicitly stating that the children of the free woman (Isaac's line) are the true heirs, while the children of the slave woman (Ishmael's line) are cast out, reinforcing the theme of spiritual freedom versus bondage.
