The phrase "who seemed to be pillars" isn't Paul downplaying their importance, but rather acknowledging how others regarded them, subtly highlighting that their real authority came from God's grace, which they recognized in Paul too. This recognition led to a specific agreement: a division of labor where Paul and Barnabas focused on the Gentiles, and James, Peter, and John on the Jewish community.
and when James and Cephas and John, who seemed to be pillars, perceived the grace that was given to me, they gave the right hand of fellowship to Barnabas and me, that we should go to the Gentiles and they to the circumcised.
English Standard Version (ESV)
Paul has just finished recounting how he went to Jerusalem to address concerns about his ministry and the gospel he preached to Gentiles. After a private meeting with the respected leaders—James, Peter, and John—they affirmed Paul's apostleship and his work among the non-Jewish people. This exchange, solidified by a handshake of fellowship, led to a clear agreement: Paul and Barnabas would focus on evangelizing the Gentiles, while Peter and the others would continue to minister to Jewish believers.
What does it mean to truly 'perceive' God's grace at work in someone else's life and ministry? The leaders in Jerusalem saw more than just Paul's achievements; they recognized God's hand.
Paul emphasizes that the leaders in Jerusalem recognized "the grace that was given to me." This wasn't just about acknowledging Paul's personal gifts or successes. It was a recognition of God's direct involvement, His empowerment, and His divine commission on Paul's life and ministry.
