What's striking here is that the Levites, not the priests, are highlighted as the ones who actually slaughtered the Passover lambs. This detail points to a shift in practice from earlier times, showing how the community adapted to ensure purity and practical execution, with the Levites taking on a crucial role in serving both the people and the priests.
For the priests and the Levites had purified themselves together; all of them were clean. So they slaughtered the Passover lamb for all the returned exiles, for their fellow priests, and for themselves. It was eaten by the people of Israel who had returned from exile, and also by every one who had joined them and separated himself from the uncleanness of the peoples of the land to worship the LORD, the God of Israel.
English Standard Version (ESV)
Following the completion of the temple and the decree from King Darius, the returned exiles are now preparing to celebrate the Passover, a crucial festival reminding them of their liberation from Egypt. This verse explains how the Levitical and priestly families, despite past lapses in observance, had all meticulously purified themselves, enabling them to carry out the Passover sacrifice for everyone, including themselves and fellow priests. This thorough preparation allowed for a unified and ritually acceptable celebration of this foundational event in their history.
Have you ever noticed how important 'togetherness' is in spiritual life? This verse highlights a beautiful picture of unity.
The verse emphasizes that the priests and Levites purified themselves 'together.' The original wording suggests they acted 'as one man,' meaning they were unanimous in their decision and unified in their actions to become ritually clean. This isn't just about following rules; it's about a shared commitment to approach God with a prepared heart. When everyone is on the same page, the spiritual work can be done efficiently and with greater honor to God.
Who actually 'slaughtered' the Passover lamb? This verse reveals a shift in responsibility that honors God's design.
While originally each household slaughtered its own lamb, the practice evolved. Here, it's clear the Levites took the lead in slaughtering the Passover lamb. They did this not only for the returned exiles and for themselves but also 'for their brethren the priests.' This indicates that the Levites were handling a significant part of the sacrificial duties, likely because the priests were occupied with other sacred tasks during this busy feast. It shows a practical outworking of God’s principles, ensuring the Passover could be celebrated properly.
What does it really take to 'draw near' to God? This verse reminds us that God cares about our preparation.

The core reason the Passover could be celebrated was the priests and Levites' purification. They were 'all pure.' This isn't just about outward cleanliness; it reflects an inner readiness to approach the holy God. In the Old Testament, ritual purity was essential for participating in sacrifices. This teaches us that our worship and service to God should be approached with intentionality and a desire to be set apart from sin. True worship flows from a heart that has been made clean, enabling a genuine encounter with the divine.
