Ezra 6:19-22

What does Ezra 6:19-22 mean?

This wasn't just any Passover observance; it was the first time the returning exiles celebrated it with proper solemnity since their release from Babylon. It marked a profound moment of "renewal," mirroring their original redemption from Egypt, especially significant after completing the temple and a new "wilderness" of hardship had been passed.

On the fourteenth day of the first month, the returned exiles kept the Passover. For the priests and the Levites had purified themselves together; all of them were clean. So they slaughtered the Passover lamb for all the returned exiles, for their fellow priests, and for themselves. It was eaten by the people of Israel who had returned from exile, and also by every one who had joined them and separated himself from the uncleanness of the peoples of the land to worship the LORD, the God of Israel. And they kept the Feast of Unleavened Bread seven days with joy, for the LORD had made them joyful and had turned the heart of the king of Assyria to them, so that he aided them in the work of the house of God, the God of Israel.

What Ezra 6:19-22 means

Just after the triumphant dedication of the newly rebuilt Temple, the returning exiles celebrate a crucial moment of remembrance and renewal. They keep the Passover, marking a return to God's appointed rhythms and a fresh commemoration of their redemption, mirroring their recent release from Babylonian exile with their ancient deliverance from Egypt. This feast signifies not just a religious observance but a spiritual restoration, happening in the month following the Temple's completion, echoing key renewals of worship in Israel's past.

Remembering Freedom, Again

Imagine living under a foreign power, your homeland in ruins, your temple destroyed. Then, after years of hardship, a new temple is finally built. What's the first thing you do?

The returned exiles didn't just finish the temple; they celebrated a profound act of worship that looked both backward and forward. The Passover was a feast that commemorated Israel's liberation from Egypt. For these returned exiles, completing the temple and then celebrating Passover was like a second Exodus. It was a powerful reminder that God’s deliverance wasn’t just a historical event but a present reality. They were experiencing fresh mercy, and it was calling them to remember God's ancient faithfulness.

Worship Restored, Joy Renewed

The temple lay in ruins for decades, and worship was stifled. What does it feel like to finally worship God properly again, especially after such a long wait?

This Passover wasn't just any observance; it was celebrated with immense joy and solemnity after the temple was finished. Previous Passovers might have been improvised or difficult due to instability and lack of proper facilities. But now, with the temple rebuilt and dedicated, they could worship God according to His commands. This wasn't merely going through the motions; it was a 'joyful festival.' It signifies the restoration of God's presence and covenant relationship, a vibrant expression of their renewed hope and allegiance.
