Ezra 4:2-3

What does Ezra 4:2-3 mean?

Their offer to help rebuild the temple isn't just a friendly gesture; it's a calculated move to gain influence and find grounds for accusation. By claiming they "seek your God as you do" and "sacrifice to him," they’re presenting a false unity to insinuate themselves into the project and undermine it from within.

they approached Zerubbabel and the heads of fathers’ houses and said to them, “Let us build with you, for we worship your God as you do, and we have been sacrificing to him ever since the days of Esarhaddon king of Assyria who brought us here.” But Zerubbabel, Jeshua, and the rest of the heads of fathers’ houses in Israel said to them, “You have nothing to do with us in building a house to our God; but we alone will build to the LORD, the God of Israel, as King Cyrus the king of Persia has commanded us.”

What Ezra 4:2-3 means

The returned exiles, led by Zerubbabel, have just begun rebuilding the temple in Jerusalem. Suddenly, a group identifying themselves as residents of the land, descendants of those deported by the Assyrian king Esarhaddon, approach with an offer to help. They claim to worship the same God and have been sacrificing to Him since their ancestors were brought to the land, suggesting a shared religious heritage.

The Trojan Horse of 'Common Worship'

They showed up with smiles, offering to help rebuild the Temple. Their words sounded good – 'we worship your God, just like you!' But was it genuine?

The people who approached Zerubbabel weren't truly seeking God alongside the returned exiles. They were the Samaritans, a mixed group whose worship blended the worship of the Lord with the idolatry of the nations the Assyrians had brought into the land (2 Kings 17:26-33).

Their offer to help build the Temple wasn't about partnership in God's work. Instead, the commentary highlights that their true motive was sinister: they wanted to get close enough to interfere, to find fault, and to disrupt the project (Poole, Benson, Wesley).

This is a powerful reminder that outward declarations of shared faith can mask hidden agendas. True unity in God's work isn't just about saying the right words; it's about aligning our hearts and practices with His will.

Sacrifice as a Claim to Legitimacy

These newcomers insisted they 'sacrifice to Him' as proof of their devotion. But why was this specific claim so important, and why did it fall flat?

The Samaritans pointed to their history of sacrifice, tracing it back to King Esarhaddon's resettlement of people in Samaria. They were essentially saying, 'We've been doing this for a long time, so we belong.'

However, their claim was flawed for two key reasons:

Location Matters: True worship and sacrifice were to be offered only at the designated place—the Temple in Jerusalem. Sacrifices made elsewhere, especially by a group with mixed worship, were unacceptable.
